JERRY IS HOME!!!
Please call him if you want to see him to make sure he is available.
This discussion forum is for us to all post on our visits and any updates on Jerry Mesquita.
Jerry lost consciousness in a CVS on Monday evening and fell and hit his head.
He was apparently awake and talking when he was admitted to Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. He apparently told the hospital personnel that he thought he had a seizure, or it could be that the nurses thought he had a seizure. We are trying to verify this information.
Jerry has a breathing tube assist his breathing through the night.
He has been lightly sedated through the night and although he should have woken up by this time he has not. He does open his eyes at times but will not respond to questions or commands.
Tuesday evening: Many friends and coworkers have have been up here to visit. Manisha checked on him several times during the night and had nothing to report. Catalina stayed the night and nothing new to report.
Wednesday morning/afternoon: We asked how long Jerry has to be on the breathing apparatus. The nurse indicated he was breathing on his own but they needed to keep him on it in case they have to run any more test where he has to be sedated.
Jerry was visited by a neurologist in the morning and was just hooked up for a constant EEG to monitor his brain activity.
Another nurse in the morning indicated Jerry does have "uncontrolled diabetes" and his kidneys are not filtering as they should. The words they used are "abnormal kidney function".
His blood pressure is normal. His sugar levels are being monitored and controlled through insulin in his IV. His MRI came back either last night or this morning and does not indicate stroke or any other abnormality - thus, the reason for the EEG to monitor his brain activity since he has not woken up.
The staff will come by this afternoon to pull fluid from his lumbar (spine) to rule out any type of viral or bacterial meningitis. There does not seem to be a concern about this but they are just going to test him.
We believe he can sense the discomfort of the tubes in his throat because he squirms when the nurses have to adjust the tubes.
Other Questions and Answers
1. Has Jerry's family been contacted? We have gone through his phone contacts and have attempted to contact his sister in Germany (Maria) as well as his sister in law. A social worker came by today and asked for this information as well.
2. We need his Primary Care Physician contact information. We pulled Dr. numbers from his phone but none of us are certain who his primary care physician is. If you have that information, please post it on this forum.
3. Where is Jerry's car? Adam was able to retrieve Jerry's car. Additionally, Adam is attempting to get information about Jerry's PCPs from any prescriptions and paperwork in Jerry's car and at his residence.
4. Can I see Jerry? Yes, of course! Two visitors are at a time are allowed. This is Jerry, folks - the nurses have already reminded us only two at a time on several occasions.
5. Can I post my own comments here? Please do! We set this discussion board up so we could all communicate and not have to rely on text and email. If you visit Jerry, please post your visit here with an update. All will appreciate that!

Jerry's A1C is at 13.3~13.4 when normal A1C is 4.5-6.0, pre-diabetic is 6.1-7.0, anything above 7.0 is diabetes.
I asked what his lay glucose reading was and they said abnormally high.
As a diabetic, normal for us is 100-120 fasting and try not to go over 180 after a meal. 200-260 is high and anything over 300 is abnormally high.
Please note that I'm not trying to scare anyone. I've gotten as high as 525 and still was able to walk and drive.
With the insulin, his sugar levels will go down.

Jerry is a tough man it will take more than a fall to take him down.

I do hope so. I asked one of his coworkers if she could ask the nurses if they have tested him for ketoacidosis since it can put you in a coma like state. My mom went through it a few years ago and she had about the same symptoms.
Another friend named Catalina will be there tonight around 9:00 PM Central. Hopefully she also gives us more updates as well.

He was squeezing Catalina's hand when he opened his eyes and she would ask him to squeeze her hand.
He looked around to see who was there and when he saw me he moved his head like he was trying to say, "Oh no, no no noooooo." I take that as a good thing!

Update from Catalina:
"Jerry was given some more stimulants but no change. He is still in the same state."
I asked her to please ask the nurses if they have checked him for ketoacidosis. Hopefully they test him for it.

I added Jerry to our church's prayer chain. When I was there earlier they performed a procedure which is why they needed him to lay flat. I am saying a prayer right now as well. Thanks to those who set this up and to all who have come up or will come up to visit and are praying for him. I believe he knows we are there, so that may help him to recover.

We visited Jerry few minutes ago, we talked to him and he responded with moving his leg. He open his eyes for few seconds however there was no further response. Lets all pray for him and his health. I agree with you John, we got the same feeling he knows we are there supporting him to recover and I am sure he will get better soon. I feel his movements are a signal that he is listening. Please keep the posting so we all get updated on Jerry's recovery.

11:57pm- Wednesday I spoke With nurse here. Jerry is trying to respond when people try to talk to him. But, at the same time he feels restless and agitated. It would be nice if he gets good rest so that he can recover soon.
At present his blood pressure is high. Nurse told me that good thing is that the brain activity they are currently monitoring looks good. I will be staying here until early morning. Will post an update in morning if there is improvement. If he gets good rest through out the night. I am pretty sure he will be much better by tomorrow morning.
